Transforming communities through renewable energy.

Bow Valley Green Energy Cooperative

We are a grassroots, socially responsible organization that aims to facilitate the creation of community-owned renewable energy generation projects in the Bow Valley. We are community lead and volunteer-driven.

At Bow Valley Green Energy Cooperative, we believe that Albertans can have an inclusive and prosperous local economy while contributing to a healthy environment. That’s why we are energizing a community of changemakers to transform Alberta’s energy.

To truly make a difference in the fight against climate change everyone must benefit. As a member-owned cooperative, we install renewable energy projects – like solar, geothermal, hydro or wind - that create local jobs, support local businesses, and pay dividends to local investors. Our clean electricity displaces grid-supplied energy. This reduces the carbon intensity of the AB grid and shrinks our communities’ carbon footprint.

If you are passionate about making a difference in your community and connecting with others who share your values, become a changemaker, and join our movement today!

Our Vision: To make renewable energy affordable and accessible in the Bow Valley and beyond

Our Mission: To empower our community to reduce its environmental impact by Pooling human and financial resources to foster the development of Renewable Energy projects and to lead our community on the transition to a more sustainable future

Governance

Unlike shareholder organizations, BVGEC is 100% democratically controlled and jointly owned by our Members. Large or small, each Member has an equal vote at our Annual General Meeting and may run for a position on our Board of Directors.

Members of BVGEC are Alberta residents older than 18 who have purchased a Member share and whose Membership has been approved by the board of directors.

Our Board comprises up to twelve directors who the Members elected at the annual general meeting. Directors serve for set terms and are not remunerated. BVGEC holds director and officer insurance for the activities of the board. The board is responsible for projects, PPA contracts, shareholder dividend returns, borrowing and distributing our Community Benefits Fund.

Board committees have been formed to lead all aspects of BVGECs operations. You don't need to be a Member to contribute to this work; our volunteer Friend opportunity encourages participation from anyone interested in our work regardless of household income.

BVGEC is incorporated as an Opportunity Development Cooperative under Alberta Cooperatives Act. 2001. We operate under Bylaws that are reviewed by the membership at each Annual General Meeting.

BVGEC is guided by the 7 principles of cooperative governance
